Ticks can transmit the bacterium that causes Lyme disease - or borreliosis - along with other tick-borne infections. Lack of knowledge and awareness means it often takes years for patients to receive an accurate diagnosis. By this time, symptoms can spread throughout the body causing systemic disease, and complicating treatment.
If caught early, an adequate course of antibiotics will usually treat the infection successully.

One thing is clear - from medical Lyme advocacy groups (see ILADS); to the Huffington Post: "According to the CDC, there are 300,000 individuals who are affected annually by Lyme disease." to Buzzfeed (yup that surprised me too!): "It is often misdiagnosed as MS, ALS, Chronic Fatigue syndrome [/ME], Fibromyalgia, Autism, Alzheimers, Parkinson's, etc." - the internet is buzzing with Lyme disease discussion. Patients are trying to get better - often by self-treatment or by travelling abroad. In many cases these are the only options available; and can be very expensive.
It is time to focus attention on this issue and stop it destroying any more lives. The UK/ NHS does not have a UK-specific plan in place for treating Lyme disease. GPs are not educated on it, despite ticks infected with Lyme disease recorded even in city parks. Increasing numbers of people receiving Lyme diagnoses means large numbers of people are not receiving treatment for a treatable disease. This needs to be addressed to help current patients, and to ensure future patients are treated effectively.
